1. GATE
2. When should one start preparing for GATE?
3. Rough Timeline for 1 Year of Preparation
- The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering(GATE), as its name suggests its an aptitude test, so GATE will not test your memory capacity. GATE requires a clear understanding of theory and common sense of engineering.
- Normally students start preparing for the GATE in 3rd year, but if your fundamentals are clear, GATE can be cracked with the preparation of 6 months.
- For approx 6 months focus on theory, solve some numerical (solve previous year question once) along with theory. Keep in mind that not every subject is equally important, it's not about covering 100% syllabus but covering 90% syllabus with 100% understanding.
- For approx 4 months focus extensively on solving as many numerical as possible from various sources. Here too, keep in mind to solve more from the important topics of each subject. Subscribe one test series, they are generally available from May, solve the subject wise test and revise the weak areas that subject. Previous year questions are Gems, You must solve them ablest 4-5 times throughout your preparation.
- For approx 2 months, focus on solving full-length tests, Revise topics where you stuck after every test. Within 2 months you shall roughly give 30-40 full-length tests from various sources. In the previous week of the GATE exam, revise your notes and Formulas.
- Note down important concept and formulas while reading theory and note down the mistake which you make while solving numerical so that you don’t repeat them in the exam.
- For 70 technical marks: MADE EASY postal study course material will do the job for almost every subject. If you have more difficulty understanding concepts you can refer to other reference books and NPTEL videos. if your professors are approachable, it's best to go to them for any doubt in theory. Hand made notes are also available on the internet.
- For 30 non-technical marks: For Maths, the book by MADE EASY is really good, solve it cover to cover at least 2 times and you can expect to score 13+ in Maths. For aptitude, you can follow any CAT material to clear theory and solve the previous year GATE aptitude questions, which should do the job. For English, if you already have command over the language then there is no need to prepare for it, just go through the previous year's questions. if you are not good at English, leave those 4 Questions on luck, don’t spend too much time preparing for it, just go through previous year's questions to get an idea.
- While giving the full-length test, try different sequence in which you will solve 2 marks, 1 marks, technical, non-technical questions and prepare one sequence which works the best for you.
- You will need accuracy with speed to score well in GATE so, make sure you practice on-screen calculator as much as possible.
- Read the question carefully, GATE will play with the language of questions just to confuse, see what exactly is asked to avoid making silly mistakes.
- If possible go through ESE prelim previous year questions (MCQ numerical).
- MADE EASY test series is preferred, you can also give a full-length test from GATE Forum and Ace.
